02 Mazda 626 automatic tachometer rockets to 4000 rpms at first few gears engine light has come off and on what gives?
You need to have the code read. Go to Autozone and they will read it for free. If I had to guess I would say that your VSS sensor is either giving out or the Pcm is getting bad info from another sensor.

"Disconnect the negative terminal and push brake pedal for 30 seconds" worked great! One note: You must use actual key to unlock doors after battery disconnect to reset car alarm so car will start. I recomend getting the car checked out by a professional. And you never unhook the positive battery c…able first, you always do the negative firstl. And sometimes when you do this it erases the computers memory. so take to a professional. If you HAVE TO, disconnect the negative battery terminal. Put your foot on the brake pedal for 30+ seconds. I tried the previous answer of removing the negative battery cable, and holding the brake pedal for 30 seconds and it WORKED!!! Just got back from the emissions test, and passed. THANKS!!! I got check engine light problem just happened few hours ago, my car is 1999 Mazda 626 ES, and I tried the previous answer of above- revmoving the negative cable as well. It REALLY WORKS. It saved my time & money ^^ [Apr 27, 2008] Just applied this method "disconnect the negative battery terminal. Put your foot on the brake pedal for 30+ seconds.", it just worked perfectly. Save me lots of worries and trouble to send the car to mechanics. Thanks so much to the one who posted this method. i just used removed the negative battery and stepped on the brake for 30 seconds on my 2000 626 es and it worked! saved $80 Just did wt u said and it really works...thanks a million Same thing works on a 2006 MX 5 Miata....light came on due to loose gas cap and I sure did not want to pay the dealer to reset the dang thing.....Advisable to check out why you have the light at AutoZone or most other parts houses before you reset the light. a car scanner can help you. Since it is OBD11 it requires a scanner to retrieve the codes. Most parts stores will read then for free. you can use a car scanner to clear it out.
If a 1997 Mazda 626 engine light keeps coming on and the mechanic already changed the oxygen sensor what else could be causing this to happen?
Hi guys ( and gals)... had the same problem on a UK registered 2001 626 GSi Automatic ( not Ford Built ) at about 100k miles and took it to my main dealer with a virtually full tank of petrol ( see below) for a computer code check as the problem was intermittent..they diagnosed and fitted a new lamb…da sensor ( at great cost ) which seemed to cure the problem until fuel ran low...got the warning light back!. Noticed that when I had refueled, it was fine but when fuel was low, the light came on and the car started missing a bit..It felt almost like fuel starvation like on old motorbikes that I owned years ago but filter was clean / almost new. Will add that car was serviced "almost religiously"!! Went to a backstreet garage nearby who diagnosed at once "fuel pump failure"...the weight of the fuel was forcing it through the system and as fuel was used, less was getting to engine, getting leaner etc, etc! Fitted ( cheaply ) pattern fuel pump, problem solved, gave the car away in 2007 with 250k miles on clock when I bought my latest Mazda 6 and it is still going strong locally! My advice is, check fuel pump before lambda O2 sensor...it's easy now I know, pull the pipe off the connection block and see the flow, if you get soaked in petrol, the pump is ok ( and don't go near a naked flame!), if not, likely to be pump Following answers are nothing to do with me but where I have probably tapped into the wrong section and posted incorrectly... please observe and respect their solutions..who knows, they are probably right and little me, in Cornwall, UK is wrong! Have the proverbial, " Nice Day " There's no way to know until you hook up an OBD-II code scanner to read the codes. There are several scanners available on the market, the cheapest is around $122 but any decent garage should have one these days. The Mazda uses ISO 9141-2 protocol. There's a nice list of OBD-II codes here http:/autorepair.about.com/cs/troubleshooting/l/bl_obd_main.htm i had the same problem.. i found a wire pulled out of the pin at the connector, not to far from the o2 sencer.. error code 0171. system to lean. today just changed fuel filter, Mazda 626 97. not sure if the error code will come back or not. will know tomorrow, Funny, I dealt with this today, mine came on and i hooked it up to the ODBII and it read "system to lean" im assuming the fuel filter needs to be changed. I have a 1999 Mazda 626 with a 4 cylinder that needed the intake manifold gasket replaced. I was told it was a common problem for the gasket to leak. The leak at the gasket will cause the car to run lean because of increased air. My car also had an idle problem. I had the same problem with my 1997 626 it come to find out i had an exhust leak and i also had a trans problem. The exhaust leak made my car run real lean. But ya your best bet is to hook it up to the ODBII to get the code or codes and go from there. If the CE light comes on, drive to your nearest Auto Zone store and they will check it and give you the codes for free. "> I had a code coming back "system too lean" also a code that the O2 sensor had a problem and "catalytic converter not efficient. The engine acted like it was running out of gas and the tranny even gave me trouble and had a code on that too. Another code said I may have a dirty MAFS. They make a MAFS cleaner to spay on and clean. All the codes went away and the problems were fixed for $7 !!! Makes sense if the engine is not getting the right air combination to start with all the other sensors will pick up a bad reading. By the way...an auto repair shop charged me $100 to diagnose this and give me the codes and concluded I needed a new cat converter at $1300 , a rebuilt tranny at $2,800 and clean the MAFS at $60 Autozone gave me the same codes for free. Why would a 1990 Ford Ranger 2.3L 5 speed with 106667 miles check engine light come on when driving at low rpms but go off at higher rpms?
i had the same problem when i smogged my truck and it is probaly two things the extenison connector to a little sensor on the passenger side fender wall next to the fire wall. just follow the vacuum lines from the egr valve. all it is an 2 inche extenison to a connector that can go bad from time to …time and you really don't need it. just plug the sensor back in. the egr position valve sensor. the little plastic thing connect to the outside of the egr valve on the of the enginge to the rear. this part will run you around $30 - $45 dollars (MORE)
What is wrong with a 1991 Mazda 626 that is jerking in 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th gear and stalls when the RPMs get low?
Answer . This just happened to my 91 mx6. Wouldn't run with any power. Would only run at higher rpm. \n. \nMine turned out to be the rubber accordion air intake assembly. Over time the rubber becomes brittle and breaks which allows outside air to be drawn in. The mechanic told me this air i…s not metered by the mass flow meter, hence the computer can't calculate the correct amount of gas. \n. \nMine was broke on the accordion ribs. This is made to flex as the engine torques. He tested it with a piece of duct tape over the open broken area, then ordered the assembly. About $70 for the part, another $70 for diagnose and install. Of course duct tape may do the job. (MORE)
\n. \n Answer \n. \n. \nYou're talking about the "check engine" light. The car's computer turns the light on for one of two reasons: 1) a sensor has detected a condition that is preventing the car from operating within specifications, or 2) a sensor is faulty. In either case, you should have …the car checked by a knowledgeable professional to determine why the light is on. They'll do this by connecting a code reader to your car's computer and determining what code(s) have been set. (MORE)

Why would the overdrive light come on after driving your 1997 Mazda 626 with a rebuilt automatic transmission on the highway for a while?
I have a 97 626 2.0l auto, my transmission was the first to fail, OD blinked for 30,000 miles and i had to replace. But because i took too long to replace, my engine followed suit, so i replaced that too. CAUTION! Please replace after max 20,000 miles use of a slipping tranny. Now to answer your qs,… try providing more air into ur engine and tranny, 1st replace airfilter, change oil and drive slow for a little while. If no change, continue to increase air by switching to custom air intake and find a good mechanic who will position your tranny inline with the engine, PROPERLY. Note: Tanny flash and frequent oil changes clean out the system. CD4E transmission by FORD is difficult, but Mazda has the best engines. WHAT A TRADE-OFF. MAZDA HAS ISSUED A SB FOR THIS PROBLEM I DONT REMEMBER THE SERVICE BULLITON #. IT CALLS FOR OIL COOLER FOR TRANNY AND IMPROVED RADIATOR.INSTALLING THESE PARTS WILL PREVENT TRANNY FLUID FROM OVER HEATING AND TRIGGRING OD LIGHT. YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET INFO ABOUT SB FROM ANY MAZDA DEALER NEAR YOU. (MORE)
Answer . \nThere are some very quick checks to fix this. I found that my car was running very rich (lots of gas and exhaust but no get up and go). I replaced everything! Hopefully I can save you some time and money. \n. \nFirst find the air intake sensor, it should be between your filter and th…e throttle along the air intake hose. Disconnect it. Try your car now. Mine turned into a formula one race car after this step alone - of course by this time I had replaced the fuel filter, fuel pump, air filter, fuel regulator, O2 sensors and fuel injectors. Your 1995 Mazda 626 v6 check engine light cycles on and off There is no error code you've replaced the oxygen and throttle position sensor with no change in the engine light Any other ideas?
Answer . \nI had a similar problem with my 1994-95 Mazda 626 V6, with various dash warning lights (eg ABS) coming on intermittently, usually when the car was at low speed or idling. Eventually I found the problem to be the alternator, in that it could not provide enough power, and the car started… to shut down various components. The alternator was replaced, and I haven't had a problem since.\n. \nRegards, Mark.. Answer . Have your fuel injectors cleaned. Especially if you have noticed a drop in mpg. (MORE)

What would cause the check engine light to come on for a few seconds then go off at low RPM on a 1994 mercury cougar with a 3.8 V6?
Answer disconnecting the battery will turn off the light but won't fix the problem.it is more than likely low oil pressure at low rpm.usually a small leak around oil pressure sensor Disconnect your battery completely for about 15 minutes. Hook the cables back up, let the car idle for 2 or 3 minutes…. This should take care of the problem. Basically you are just rebooting the computer on your car. (MORE)

Why would the OD Off light be blinking while the check engine light is on in 1996 Mazda 626 Dx Sedan?
Answer . \nCommonly, the OD blinking and subsequent CEL are due to the tranny overheating. Most common on the 4 cylinder (AT) models. OD light blinking implies the tranny is overheating. the CEL appears when the tranny is significantly overheating. Frequent fluid changes and an auxillary tra…nny cooler can help extend the life. It appears that the transmission on the 4 cylinder is simply undersized. (MORE)
1988 Mazda RX 7 Convertable. Having problems when tachometer reaches 3500 RPM it boggs totally lose's power then when it hits 4000 RPM it kicks back in..Any ideas?
Answer . this sometimes occurs when your fuel system has a blockage, usually in the fuel filter. try changing the fuel filter first. . 3800 RPM Hesitation . The dreaded 3800 RPM hesitation is cause 90% of the time by poor ground connections between the engine, the battery, and the car. Clean… or replace all the under hood ground connections. If there is still a problem after that, look at cleaning the fuel injectors and (on a N/A) that your 5th/6th ports are operating correctly. . 3800 RPM Hesitation. Why does a Mazda protege run fine for a few minutes and then the engine light comes on and it starts to stall?
It is a defective mass airflow sensor. Mazda offered an extended warranty for this part until 2006. Buy one second hand for about $75.00 canadian. A new one will cost you around $400.00.
Hi, I have the same problem with my 2000 Mazda 626. Still working on the problem, but I found this helpful: http://www.aa1car.com/library/problem_hesitation.htm . DIAGNOSTIC TIPS FOR P0171 OR P0174 LEAN TROUBLE CODES . A code P0171 or P0174 (or both) indicate the engine is running lean. This …means there is too much air and/or not enough fuel.. If you have a scan tool that can display Short Term Fuel Trim (STFT), you can confirm the engine is running lean by looking at the STFT at idle. If STFT is greater than about 10 to 12, the engine is running LEAN. Increase engine speed to 1600 to 2000 rpm and hold for a minute or so, then recheck the STFT value. If it has dropped 3 or 4 points or more, the lean problem is due to a vacuum leak (vacuum leaks have more of an impact on the idle fuel mixture than the cruise mixture). If the STFT valve is still the same, the problem is probably sensor-related (dirty or bad MAF sensor, or bad MAP sensor), or is due to low fuel pressure. The next steps would be to use the scan tool to look at the airflow and MAP sensor readings, and to check fuel pressure.. A lean fuel condition can be caused by: * Low fuel pressure due to a weak pump or leaky fuel pressure regulator. (use a fuel pressure gauge to check fuel pressure at idle) * Dirty fuel injectors. (try cleaning the injectors) * Vacuum leaks at the intake manifold, vacuum hose connections or throttle body. (Check for vacuum leaks) * Leaky EGR valve. (Check the operation of the EGR valve) * Leaky PCV Valve or hose. (Check valve and hose connections) * Dirty or defective Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF). (Try cleaning the MAF sensor wires or filament with aerosol electronics cleaner. Do NOT use anything else to clean the sensor, and do not touch the sensor wires) * TIP: On many Fords, a P0171 and/or P0174 Lean Code may sometimes appear because of a bad Differential Pressure Sensor (DPFE). This sensor monitors EGR flow, and is located on the engine near the EGR valve. There are two hoses that connect the sensor to the tube that runs from the exhaust manifold to the EGR valve. The sensor misreads EGR flow and the computer increases EGR which has a leaning effect on the fuel mixture. The fix is to replace the DPFE sensor. * TIP: For information about other causes of P0171 and P0174 lean codes on Ford Windstar, Click Here . REPAIRS . Repairs will depend on what is causing the hesitation. If the cause is fuel related, it may require cleaning the fuel injectors or fixing a vacuum leak. If the cause is ignition related, it may require replacing the spark plugs and plug wires (MORE)

If the light comes on and turns off as you mentioned, this is normal it does not mean there is something wrong. If the light stays on for as long as the vehicle is running, then you should seek a repair shop, because there could be something that needs to be looked at, or repaired.
the possibilities are endless. You need to have the ECM scanned at a local shop and it will tell you the code that the computer is recording. The code is specific to a component in your vehicle and the shop will be able to tell you what component.

If the check engine light is blinking , an engine cylinder misfire has been detected
There are several possible causes. A few: . The engine is cold and making less power so you are pushing the gas peddle further causing the transmission to hold the gear longer . The computer is programed to do this ( but I have no idea why it would be) . The transmission has a sticky or stuck val…ve that requires the higher speed to move. . It is really really cold and the oil in the transmission just needs time to loosen up. (MORE)
