01 Ford Escort ZX2 Changed plugs one at a time correctly gapped but now very rough idle sputters and check engine light is on?
If the check engine light is on you can bring the car to advance auto parts and they will, hook your car up to a machine that will tell you exactly what you need to replace for free If you used CHEAP plugs this will happen. My 98 ZX2 did the EXACT same thing When i put in the cheap plugs. Put the more expensive ones in and problem solved. I would go with the Motorcraft (ford) plugs about $6 a plug...Worth it because you'll see a dramatic increase in your gas mileage.

If you changed plugs wires forward 02 sensor and throttle sensor but your 200 Ford Escort is still running idleing rough what do you do next?
you might want to check your egr valve. if it's stuck open and leaky just a little bit it will almost kill the engine. it's easy to check if you have a vacuum pump. they are cheap and available at any auto parts store. the procedure is in the chiltons manual. if you need more detail just yell. I'm h…aving a similar problem. my idle is going up and down randomly. i'v checked every sensor that i can and everything checks out good. while testing the idle air control valve i found it was making the idle change but it was because its signal voltage was changing. the only thing i haven't changed is the pcm. any ideas? Reset error codes, Oxygen sensor is ignored if old errors are not cleared. The idle going up and down, depending upon how erratic, may be normal behavior during the warm-up process. Check the timing belt and make sure that the timing marks are still in alignment. Unfortunately checking the timing mark on the crankshaft requires removing the damper. Otherwise it'd be cake. Could be MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor. Located between air cleaner box and throttle body. I was having the same problem I unplugged the MAF sensor and it ran better. So, I replaced it and it ran even better yet. I replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter before that. But, it still ran rough. I tested fuel pressure and it was fine. (MORE)
Don't do it if the belt looks ok. Pull the timing belt cover and look at the belt. If you don't see significant cracks and none of the teeth are torn off, leave it alone. The ZX2 98 and above timing belts can go reliably up to 120,000 mi. These models are equipped with a non-interference engine so w…hen your timing belt snaps, your engine/valves will not get damaged. If you've never changed a timing belt before and you are an ameteur DIY mechanic, you are in for a world of pain if you try changing your timing belt. When you change the belt, if you don't put it on exactly how it needs to go (this is a complex procedure) your timing will be jacked up. You're car will buck, kick. Your engine will misfire, you will have significantly reduced performance. You will hate yourself for ever thinking about changing the timing belt. It's not like changing your oil or your brakes. If you don't get the belt on precisely the way it needs to be put on, you will have to keep taking your car apart until you get it right or take it to a mechanic. Some mechanics don't even get this right. You may even have to take it to a dealer where you will be charged up the you know what. If you decide you change your timing belt yourself (really think it over), get all the information you can. You must be confident in your ability and patient if you don't get the timing right. There's a good chance you won't get it right on the first try. The service manual will tell you generally what you need to do, but won't tell you about the VCT exhaust cam that needs special handling during this procedure. Make sure you know what you are getting yourself into before you do anything. (MORE)
Answer . We had this problem with our 2001 escort and we were told that we had a lot of carbon build up. We had a tune up and a carbon flush and it did way better.. Answer . I had this problem, I thought it was electrical since it mainly happened when I turned on the lights or heater. I chang…ed out the fuel filter and the problem was fixed. I also have a small vacuum leak in a hose off the valve cover that adds a little to the vibration.. Answer. My 98 zx2 has the same problem. I took it in and my mechanic told me that there had been a maintenence recall on the transmission mounts. they said the transmission mounts on zx2s tend to wear out over time and that causes the vibration. they also said you'll know that's the problem if it smooths out in neutral.. Answer . Tune up will probably help. Kind of sounds like your fule filter may be cloged.. Answer . if the cam belt has been changed recently the cam positioning sensor could be bad so if you know someone with a programmer talk to them to be sure. Answer . This could be due to damage/deterioration of the motor mounts. The next time you take your ZX2 in to be serviced ask the technician to check the motor mounts for excessive wear.. Answer . I was experiencing this very issue on my 2000 ZX2 and it turned out to be a leak in the hose that connects to the PCV Valve. Replaced the hose and the engine smoothed out.. ANSWER . This is due to a design issue with the engine. There is a Technical Service Bulletin from Ford TSB 031515 that involves reconfiguring the motor mounts. I've chosen to just live with it. (MORE)
You have a 1996 Mercury Sable LS you hydro-locked the engine now you have changed the plugs and got all the water out and put is all back together now it is not idling correctly what else to check?
Answer . \nIf the engine was hydro-locked, there may be bent connecting rods, which will cause low compression on affected cylinders. You need to do a compression test. Remember also, if the water got into the cylinders via the air cleaner inlet, the air filter may be saturated with water, which… will cause it not to breathe. You may need a new air filter, check that. Also if that is the path that the water took to get in, it would have had to pass through the MAF sensor, which may have damaged it, or it could still be waterlogged. That should be enough to get you started in the right direction, I really can't think of anything else, unless of course, the reason the engine was hydro-locked was that coolant got in by way of a blown headgasket, and you still have a headgasket problem. Answer . It means the computer has detected a problem with the emissions system. Make sure your gas cap is tight. If that is not the problem, then you need to have the computer scanned for a fault code. This code you give you and idea where to look. Auto Zone & Advance Auto Parts will do a free s…can in most states.. The ZX2's are notorious for having temprature sending unit problems...a quick fix to get the light to go off is to make sure the radiator is full first....then if that is ok disconnect the RED or POSITIVE battery terminal for about 5 - 10 minutes. This resets the computer. You'll have to reprogram your radio and clock but the CES light will be out. If it comes back on then have it checked like above. (MORE)

I just purchased a 1996 Ford Escort 2 door coupe However it's idiling very rough-and the check engine light is flashing every second Could this just be a tune up or is it pulling code for a sensor?
Answer . I had a 1997 Ford Contour that did the exact same thing. It turned out to be 2 different sensors. It cost about $550 to get them fixed.
Answer . \nPropably needs a tune up. Plugs & wires. This vehicle is 11 years old.
When i come to a stop my 1998 ford explorer idles really rough what can i do to fix this. My check engine light also goes on and off if that has anything to do with it.?
Answer . \nSeems like the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) is acting up. Among other things, the TPS would cause the Check Engine Light to light up. Check the code(s) stored on the self-diagnosatic system memory to be sure.
1996 jimmy that overheated and the thermostat was changed and now it idles rough There is no water in oil or the oil isn't cloudy so I don't think the head gasket is blown the check engine light is on?

What causes a 1997 Dodge Intrepid to idle rough after changing the plug and plug wires when the check engine light gives a code 5 cylinder misfire?
Hi Well, you have your answer: you have a cylinder misfiring. You need to know which one it is and why. Taking two pieces of stick, or a pair of WELL INSULATED rubber-handled pliers, start the engine and take off the first plug wire. If that cylinder is good, the idle will get much worse, and i…t will probably even stall, so you know that one is firing if the engine does not change. Keep going through the plug wires until you pull the wire and nothing changes. That's the bad cylinder. Pull the plug and look at it, and compare it to the sample photos that usually appear in the workshop manual. If the electrode has burned away you have a different problem than if the plug is fouled with burned oil, or if it is soaking wet with gasoline that it should be burning but isn't. If you recently changed all the plugs, did it run allright for a while, then go bad again, or did changing the plugs make no difference? Because that would indicate something more likely wrong with something else and not the plugs themselves. Is your intrepid equipped with the 3.5 liter engine? If so you likely have an air intake plenum gasket leaking. The fact that the pcm has stored a misfire code for cyl # 5 should give you a starting point to check for this condition. With the engine running at normal idle speed in park briefly spray some aerosol carb cleaner at the area where the intake plenum (upper ) is bolted to the lower intake (at #5 cylinder intake runner). If the engine smooths out when sprayed or the idle rpm increases or decreases noticably then you need to remove the upper plenum & look for a section of the gasket cracked & sucked inward, or missing entirely. This is a common condition on the 3.5. if the plenum gasket seems to be intact & no change is noted with the carb spray then you may have an issue with the fuel injector on #5 cylinder. Good luck! You just changed the plugs in your 1991 Ford Bronco and now the check engine light is on and wasnt on before you did it How do you get it to go off?
Answer . You can turn off the check engine light by disconnecting the negative battery terminal for a couple of minutes.
\nI've done a lot of looking around online and apparently it could be several reasons. I have a 2000 ZX2 also and I still haven't figured out the exact problem with mine. Is your check engine light on? if it is then you can get it read at an advanced or autozone for free and they may be able to tell… you what you need to do to fix it. Mine says engine too lean, so I replaced the fuel filter and the spark plugs but that didn't fix it, and I also just got my air filter replaced too, and that didn't help either. One person with either a 93 or a 95 replaced their TPS and they said that fixed it, but others have said it didn't help. I've heard a lot of people say it could be the transmission mount or a vaccuum hose or PCV valve hose.. but I have yet to try any of those on my car... I've had a couple people suggest the fuel pump, but my brother who knows a lot about cars doesn't believe that's it.. My brother discovered that mine is backfiring, I'm not exactly sure what that means for the rough idle, but if you wanna chech if your car is doing it just take a kleenex and hold it to the exaust pipe while it's running and if for a second it tries to suck it back in then your car is backfiring also. I'm not really sure how helpful that was, but maybe you'll be able to figure out what is is, I wish you luck... (MORE)
Why does 2003 Ford Taurus run fine but has trouble idling and will sputter and stall and the check engine light is on now?
If the check engine light comes on it is best to take it to a autopart store or mechanic for a diagnosis. They will be able to informthe owner what the issues is.
Well, it's hard to know exactly what's wrong with your situation with the information given. I assume you mean the car is IDLING HIGH? That's the only thing I can come up with that you could mean, unless it seems like it's not shifting when driving and never goes down in rpm.... Well if it is …idling high with check engine(CE) light, I would guess it to be the cold idle sensor is reading bad or disconnected. If it is bad or off, the motor believes itself to be in a "cold" state and compensates for that by idling at a higher RPM and waits for the sensor to trigger that it has warmed up and allow a "typical" idle. I would say your local mechanic will charge you a mandatory diagnostic fee to connect your car to a OBDII reader and let you know what the CE light is reading, it might be something wildly off from what I guessed but will definitely help in the guess for the problem with a price of diagnostics as a quick time saver. Good Luck, I hope I could help. (MORE)

Changed spark plugs on 2002 ford escape 6-cylinder and put in a lifetime air filter. Started the vheicle and now check engine light on and runs very rough.?
Check to make sure you got the plug wires back in the right place. Make sure you have the right plugs, and that you didn't break or crack any of them while installing. It is also possible that one of the new plugs is bad, but unlikely.
Spark plugs are electrical components that should not have contactwith any sort of fluid. The engine warning light is on as a warningfor a possible electrical system issue.
2001 jimmy overheated now running rough. We have now changed the plugs wires cap rotor water pump thermostat and temperature sensor. Still running real rough low rps and the check engine light?
Same exact problem. I'm NOT a mechanic. No fluids due to a intake manifold gasket. Replaced. Began running rough, bucking, low rpm's. Replaced 2 sensors. No help. Had to replace motor. Water in oil.. The head either cracked or the warped, therefore leaking water into the oil. Once the oil pan becom…es full of water and oil, this created too much pressure for the pistons to move in the cylenders properly. When this happens water will also go into the cylenders on top of the pistons and will not let the plugs fire properly. You should have smelled coolent in the exhaust.. A head can be removed and fixed if it wasn't cracked too bad or warped too much. Depending on the type of motor, this could cost as much as a new replacement motor. Or depending on the auto shop might have been a lot cheaper than a new motor. (MORE)
If the "check engine" light is on, use a code scanner to find out what's wrong. You can borrow, rent or buy a code scanner from most auto parts retailers. Sometimes they'll even show you how to connect it and how to read the results.
What could cause the check engine light to come on and a very rough idle on a 2001 S500 Mercedez Benz?
Its best to have the vehicle scaned, But a good place to start looking is the MAF sensor. Try tapping lightly on it and see if there is any change in the idle.
Your 1999 ford escort zx2 spits and sputters on the highway if you give it very much gas and it dies at stop signs it will not idle on its own so could it be the fuel filter?
Had the same problem, the problem with mine was a hole in the vacuum line, listen for hissing noises
Why does the check engine light came on at 99350 miles and you now have a slight rough idle on a 95 ford windstar?
The key to diagnosing the *source of the problem* is to get the codes read. The next most critical step is to research the codes - the codes are trying to tell about some strange readings the computer received. It the strange reading - for example "lean condition" bank1 - that will guide you to a t…rue FIX. NOTE: don't go out and replace any sensors until you're confident the sensor has really truly *failed* Once you have codes, check WikiAnswers for others who may have had the same readings and what solutions were offered. You may find the codes are going to lead to the Mass AirFlow (MAF) sensor and/or something to do with the EGR / DPFE systems... Not uncommon to be involved with rough idle. See "Related Questions" below for more (MORE)
ANSWER: Sounds like it might need a tune up at the very least. Take it to AUTOZONE or most any aftermarket auto parts supplier, they can hook up a reader to your car and find out what code is being generated which will tell you almost exactly what is wrong. Most places are glad to do this for free …since they are hoping you will buy your repair parts there. (MORE)

What could cause a 2004 ford F-150 to idle rough when coming to a stop and the check engine light came on?
IT could be a faulty transmission or the belt could be grinding up against an unknown source. = )
you can disconnect the battery for one minute >> then reconnect it ..... that should put the light out
take the terminal + off your battery hold it to the - terminal for about 15 seconds it will go away but probably come back depending on what is wrong .if you take it to your local autozone they will hook it to a computer for free and tell you why it is on

My 96 ford ranger super cab 4.0 v6 truck has hard time idling very rough when i pull the connector on the maf meter it idles good when I plug the maf back in it idles rough is the maf meter bad?
Probably. They are an expensive part to replace. But it is possible to clean one, however mechanics don't recommend it as the sensor, a copper wire, is easily damaged. If you remove the sensor from its housing, normally by removing two torx screws you can then see the copper wire in the open window …of the removable section. Use electrical contact cleaner or an alcohol based cleaner to clean the wire (very gently) with say a cotton bud(cue tip). Be very careful though as it is very easily damaged. Some people just spray the wire with the cleaner and do not touch it. This often resolves the problem, however you could damage the sensor in the process, that said if it needs replacing anyway then its no loss, just leave it unplugged until replacement - though replace the sensor so as not to leave the air intake open to dirt etc. Also I do not believe it is a good idea to drive around with the MAF disconnected for too long as your fuel economy will be negatively affected. Also there is a possibility of Catalytic Converter damage due to unburnt fuel passing through the exhaust. This can be expensive to replace. Also it is likely to fail its CO2 emissions test at annual MOT. A caveat, make sure the rough idle is not caused by an other problem before risking damaging the MAF, lambda sensor for instance. Clean the part at your own risk, though I have read several reports of it being done and resolving the problem (MORE)

I have a 1999 Ford escort zx2 with manual tran's. it has a rough idle but when you disconnect the cam sensor it runs fine. what is the cause?
Sounds like the sensor is bad. The sensor may be sending bad data to the computer. The computer assumes that the information is correct. The computer then uses this bad information to calculate fuel delivery, etc., therefore causing poor performance. By unplugging the sensor, computer receives no d…ata, the computer relies on data from other inputs/stored data to calculate proper output values. Try replacing the sensor. Hope this helps. Have vehicle scanned to determine the problem--sounds like one cylinder not firing, perhaps bad coil if Coil on Plug Model or bad piston or valve. May need a compression test to determine

Timing for the escort ZX2 is obtained by locating top dead center (TDC) on the crankshaft for the #1 cylinder. Once TDC is obtained (usually with a crank locking tool) the cams must be aligned as well. The cams can be aligned by using the slots on the end of the cams nearest the coil pack. When both… the crank and the cams are in these positions, timing is set and a new belt can be installed. When installing a new belt it is important to use the correct timing set necessary for the ZX2. 98-99.5 versions used a 3 pulley timing set while the 99.5-03 versions used a 2 pulley timing set. DO NOT try to install the 3rd pulley onto the newer versions otherwise you will experience an extremely short belt life. Also of importance is to ensure that the timing belt tensioner is only set within the timing mark on the tensioner. Any more tension than what the tensioner marks measure will also prematurely wear the belt and cause it to walk off the cams (MORE)

2001 ford escort zx2 manual tranny is idling at 3grand no vaccume leaks found and no check engine light is it the isc and if so where is it located?
It's the IAC (Idle Air Control). It's on top of the throttle body. Disconnect the wiring and take the 2 screws out with 8mm wrench. It looks like a little electric motor with a flange on the end. It gets dirty and sticks open allowing too much air into the engine and causes it to run way too fast. O…nce you get it off, spray it with some carb cleaner and then oil the shaft inside with a light oil. The whole purpose of this IAC is to allow more air into the engine when it is under a load while idling. The load could be the A/C compressor or the alternator. You can get a new one at Autozone, Advance or Napa for about $56. (MORE)

What does it mean when the check engine light goes on a 1994 Nissan Quest and the engine idles very rough?
The check engine light (service engine soon) comes on and stays on when a problem is detected by the self diagnosis system of your vehicle. Generally, the problem is in the emissions or something that is affecting the effectiveness of the emissions, but other causes can trigger the light to come on,… too. To determine the cause, the vehicle will need to be taken to a parts store or a shop that has an OBD2 scanner, or for 1995 and earlier models, an OBD1 scanner, While a scanner will not give you the magic answer, it will give you a code that narrows down the problem area.
